“Did You Know?”

What in the “water” is going on? Ways to help prevent excessive water usages.

It’s time for the new edition of “Did you know?” however we are going to touch base on something outside of code issues for once. Water loss is an issue in Rock Hall so I would like to address some things we can all look at to avoid over usage, and to also help educate how a small drip costs big money. Dripping faucets or fixtures can waste 3 gallons of water a day…… a total of 1095 gallons a year! Above  is a chart to show the diameter of stream (backed by 60psi water pressure) and how many gallons get wasted on each. Hold on to your water meter folks!

THESE NUMBERS ARE PER QUARTER!

Here are few things you can do to save on the little leaks that add up!

-Check for running toilets. Most of the time you can hear a “trickle” or water running.

-Check sinks and tub fixtures for drips. Also, it is a good idea if you have an access panel behind your tub fixtures to pull it and check those pipes as well.

-Check under sinks as well for loose connections.

-Washer hookups should be checked often, especially if you have that annoying washer that seems to be unlevel and moves from time to time.

-Inspect all water lines and include your water heater if you have one, these tend to break down and rust over time creating pin hole leaks.

-Make sure to shut off and drain outside spickets. This helps from the line freezing and causing it to burst/crack. (It’s always good to insulate these as well for added precautions)

-Keep aware of lower water pressure suddenly. This could be a sign of the start of a leak.

I touched base on some of the issues we see. If you believe you may have a leak it also does not hurt to call a local plumber to do a maintenance checklist and inspect. If you see water coming out of the ground were you are sure it shouldn’t be coming from please call in so we can check on it! Have a great day and enjoy the approaching Holidays! P. S……. try to stay warm!
