Did you know?

It’s time for another edition of “Did you know”? Id like to address issues with drainage and water issues within the town. We all know when it rains in Rock Hall there is a lot of standing water and poor drainage. The reason for this is partially because there are a lot of culverts that are blocked up and or deteriorated from just being old. You must factor in the sediment build up as well that has happened over the years. This slows down the drainage creating stagnant areas. This can also create a haven for mosquitos. The town is in the process of fixing our runoffs at various locations to drain the water better. It has come up countless times on who is responsible for culverts on one’s property. The answer to that is the property owner. It’s part of Chapter 133 Housing Standards and Property Maintenance. It’s every owner’s responsibility to maintain the dwelling and the property, including drainage issues. With increasing tidal conditions and throw in some rain it equals to a bit of a mess. Cleaning out culverts/ditches is crucial to maintain good water runoff. Over time they fill with sediment and slow down water flow. Please check your culverts and ditches. Keep in mind when mowing around these areas to not discharge clippings into them. Keeping them clear of obstructions is crucial for the system to work correctly. It also helps our road crew out. Take care and stay safe everyone!
