Low Speed Vehicles

LSV

As summer kicks off, we have noticed a large increase in the number of Low-Speed Vehicles (LSV) in Kent County, especially within our waterfront towns and neighborhoods. The term “LSV” can vary greatly depending on who you ask, so we made this helpful guide to make sure you are street legal!

What is a Low-Speed Vehicle?

A Low-Speed Vehicle is a four–wheeled motor vehicle that has a maximum speed capability that exceeds 20 miles per hour but is less than 25 miles per hour.

Where can Low Speed Vehicles operate?

Low-Speed Vehicles are only permitted on roadways where the posted speed limit is no more then 30mph unless prohibited by a municipal ordinance.

Do Low Speed Vehicles Have to Be Registered?

All LSVs are required to have proper registration to be operated on the roadway. More information can be found on the Motor Vehicle Administration’s website at https://mva.maryland.gov/about-mva/Pages/info/27300/27300-66T.aspx. Any driver found to be operating an unregistered low-speed vehicle on the roadway may be cited.

Do I Need a Driver’s License to Operate a Low-Speed Vehicle?

Any operator of a low-speed vehicle on a Maryland roadway is required to have a valid driver’s license.

Are All Golf Carts considered LSV’s?

No! While they may look similar, a LSV differs from a traditional “golf cart” in many ways, specifically when it comes to speed and safety equipment. For an LSV to operate on any public roadway, it must be equipped with:

· A windshield

· Turn signals.

· Rearview mirror

· Windshield wipers

· Headlights, taillights, and brake lights

· Parking brake

· Seatbelts
