MAINSTAY - Joe Holt's First Friday with Skyler Cumbia

Main Street, Rock Hall
Event Date:
Friday, June 7, 2024 - 8:00pm

The Mainstay is pleased to present folk musician Skyler Cumbia as Joe Holt’s next “First Friday” featured guest.

Starting in the mid-20th century, a new form of popular folk music evolved from traditional folk music. This "folk revival" merged with popular music and fostered a generation of singer-songwriters with familiar names such as Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary and a fellow named Bob Dylan.

Most of these artists, typically armed with just an acoustic guitar, shared a history of playing small rooms, church basements, coffee shops --what are collectively referred to as “coffeehouses.” Their songs were personal and honest and occasionally dealt with political issues. As Dylan is credited with saying "there's other things in this world besides love and sex that're important, too."

Skyler is from the Wilmington, Delaware area (an important spot in Joe’s musical territory). Joe has remarked that Skyler's show will carry on the tradition, playing works by Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot, as well as her original material.

Skyler’s loyal fan base testifies that her acoustic music is highly regarded and much loved. The fact that our jazz pianist/ impresario has singled this folk artist out is a huge compliment about her talent.
