“Did You Know”

PERMITS

Good day everyone! Dave here with the next segment of “Did you know”. Today I would like to touch base on Permits and what needs to be permitted. This can get confusing and complicated; however, I’ll try to keep it somewhat simple. Ill try to touch base on the basics and the most asked about.

Roof - “Do I need a permit to replace my roof?”. The answer is no if the roof is only in need of shingles/covering. If the roof needs repairs to the sheathing/plywood, then it will need a permit.

Windows - “Do I need a permit to replace windows/doors? “The answer is yes. You do need a permit to replace windows/doors.

Tree Removal – “Do I need a permit to remove a tree?” Yes. However, you do not need one to trim trees. That is part of the maintenance and does not require a permit.

Fences – “Do I need a permit to put up a fence?” Yes, there are different requirements for different applications, such as privacy and boundary fencing. We will run you through the differences upon your request.

Decks – “Do I need a permit to build/replace a deck?” The answer to both is yes if replacement means structurally renovating. If its basic maintenance to an existing deck, (like replacing a few deck boards/railing spindles) then no.

Sheds – “Do I need a permit for a shed?” Yes, you do need a permit for a shed.

The best advice I can give anyone is to only use licensed and insured (Maryland certified) contractors. We have quite a few here in Rock Hall and the surrounding areas! Licensed and insured contractors/electricians/plumbers know the codes and know what needs to be permitted! If there are any other questions you may have, please feel free to contact myself and I will be sure to get the answer for you! Till next time stay safe everyone and enjoy the rest of your summer!
